Huge Solar Eruption Sparks Radiation Storm

Posted by KB on Jan 24, 2012 in technology

Reminds us that we are on this tiny little planet and vulnerable to the complexity that surround us.

A powerful solar eruption is expected to blast a stream of charged particles toward Earth today (Jan. 24).

On the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration scale of radiation storms, this one ranks S3, which means it could cause isolated reboots of computers onboard Earth-orbiting satellites and interfere with polar radio communications. So no big deal, but glad it is not an S5.

What did we search for in 2011? Google tells us.

Posted by KB on Dec 16, 2011 in randomness, technology

Google has assembled the most popular and the fastest rising terms—the terms with the highest growth in 2011—in many, many categories.

Lots of surprise for me. That being said, I’m not exactly ‘Mr. Pop Culture’. But to find out that Rebecca Black was the #1 fastest rising query globally was disappointing.

Here’s a sample of the categories.

USA – Sports / Fastest Rising in Sports
1. Mayweather Vs Ortiz
2. NCAA Bracket 2011
3. Dan Wheldon

USA – Sports / Athletes

first questions to Siri

Posted by KB on Oct 14, 2011 in personal, technology

Got my new iPhone 4s today. Siri is the much ballyhooed virtual assistant that responds to voice commands on the 4S. I gave it a try.

KB, “Siri, what are the nearest golf courses?”
Siri, “I have found 9 golf courses that are nearby”

KB, “Who is my wife?”
Siri, “I don’t even know who you are. Go to your Settings to tell me.”

Made me laugh.

Torrey Pines

Posted by KB on Aug 26, 2011 in personal, sports

#3, par3

I was in San Diego for business and before things got started, I snuck over to play Torrey Pines, South – site of the 2008 U.S. Open Golf Championship, where Tiger won in a playoff against Rocco Mediate.

The place was beautiful, having wonderful practice putting greens and friendly staff. And it is clearly a municipal public golf facility. No pretense or prestige. Welcoming to all.

Loved the course and the views of the pacific. It reminder me a lot of Kingsbarns. Playing from the Whites, measuring 6,628 yards, doesn’t seem all that long, but the prevailing breeze off the ocean can really make for some long tough shots.

The element that struck me as the most challenging, were the numerous and strategically placed bunkers. Off the tee, I was consistently try to avoid one, but had another to consider. The greens are well bunked too. And huge & deep.

travel case: drive, 5wood, 4, 6, 8, pw, sw, putter

Greens were in good shape, and putts broke a lot more than I could ever figure out. My only complaint is that there is very little drinking water on the course. There is only a dinky fountain at the turn, and no where else.

I paid $183 and walked on as a single after only waiting 60-minutes at mid-day on a Thursday. I think I was a little bit lucky. Shot 90 with one birdie, a few pars, and a lot of bogies and doubles.

Google+

Posted by KB on Jul 8, 2011 in technology

I’ve recently read many different accounts of how Google’s new social platform was going to change the web and affect Facebook. It’s been difficult to form my own opinion, as I didn’t have an account until now, thanks to an invite sent by Kristen. If you’d like to try it out, just let me know and I will send you an invitation.

Women dominate social media and my life too

Posted by KB on Jun 17, 2011 in mothers, technology, work

I have this tendency towards not conforming to what everyone else is doing. It’s not that I think I know better, it’s just that I get interested in the road less travelled. This notion is a factor in my career where most of the people I interact with are women. I’m the gender-minority it most situations, and it feels right for me. That’s not to say I don’t like hanging with guys, but women are more interesting.

This gender imbalance is showing up for others in social media today. Women dominate.

Twitter is the biggest surprise as seen in the chart, where 64% are women, and only 36% male. Yup you guessed it, I’m on Twitter regularly. And even though I have a LinkedIn account, I rarely visit.

More interesting information in Social networking sites and our lives from The Pew Research Center’s Internet & American Life Project.

Google getting a lot better at marketing

Posted by KB on May 6, 2011 in marketing

Google marketing efforts used to be pretty weak. Often, for certain products, it seem like there was not at all. And the way their Search product grew, who needs marketing anyway. Well, many of their other products do. And they really seem to be finding their legs on how to communicate. Google has some of the best technology, but now they seem to understand that features don’t connect with a mass audience. Only messages that are built on emotion do.
